Alcohol

Alcohol is a classification of liquids that work as a psychoactive drug as well as a depressant of the central nervous system. Alcohol includes beer, wine, and assorted liquors (such as whiskey, rum, vodka, gin, and others). In addition to those listed, any beverage referred to as “hard” includes alcohol content, such as hard cider, hard sodas, or hard seltzers.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) includes physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms such as alcohol cravings, unlimited alcohol intake, isolating oneself, and the inability to quit using alcohol. Short-term consequences can include impaired judgement and coordination, slurred speech, extreme confusion, physical ailments, and others. Long-term consequences can include anxiety, depression, irregular sleep, seizures, as well as complications of the liver and other organs.

One misconception about alcohol is that it’s not that dangerous, but overdose from alcohol consumption is real and happens regularly. Sometimes alcohol overdose can be referred to as, “alcohol poisoning.”
